Emergence of PTSD and symptoms

Experiencing or witnessing traumatic events can have an incredible impact on your body and mind. Feeling stressed after a shocking event is a normal, logical reaction. When it results in PTSD, the symptoms can be overwhelming and can limit you in your daily life. However, none of these symptoms have to be permanent. With the right treatment, you can recover from PTSD.

What can you do to recover from PTSD

Short-term options
If you want to process the flashbacks and memories of the traumatic event, distraction can be effective in the short term. Try distracting yourself with activities such as puzzles, listening to music or exercise that require you to focus. You can also try to get rest and talk about your trauma with people you trust.
Contacting your family doctor

If your PTSD symptoms do not lessen after a month, it is a good idea to consult your doctor. Tell your family doctor what happened and what you are feeling. Your GP can then diagnose you, possibly with PTSD, possibly refer you to trauma treatment.

If you suffer from severe PTSD symptoms, it greatly disrupts your life. These symptoms affect your relationships and your work and can lead to addictions (medications) in an attempt to cope with the stress. So don't wait too long to seek help. With the right treatment, you can recover from PTSD.

Trauma therapy methods

Trauma-focused therapy is much more effective than non-trauma-focused therapy. The recommended treatments based on extensive research are: cognitive behavioral therapy CBT, (Imaginary) Exposure (IE), Cognitive Therapy and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).

Effective newer methods to treat PTSD are: Concise Eclectic Psychotherapy (BEPP), Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET), writing therapy and Imaginare Rescripting (ImRs). Because psychological treatment is more effective than medication, drug treatment is not recommended as the first treatment step.

EMDR therapy for PTSD

EMDR, or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, is a form of therapy that has become increasingly popular in recent years. It is used as a PTSD treatment at U-center and approaches psychological problems in a refreshing way.

This type of treatment does not use conventional talk therapy or medication, but rather the client's eye movements. By exposing yourself to certain stimuli (often audiovisual), you can better process the traumatic memory during therapy.

One treatment session

A healthcare professional will ask you to follow a moving object, light (often an EMDR lamp) or the therapist's hand with your eyes. This can also be done in combination with sounds through headphones. At the same time, you will be asked to think about your trauma and what you felt during the event. Then your therapist will slowly help you move to more neutral thoughts

Cognitive behavioral therapy, or CBT, is a form of therapy U-center uses to help patients recover from PTSD and other serious mental health problems. When treating PTSD, it is called Trauma Focused CBT, or TF-CGT. This form of therapy has two parts, one focused on the cognitive side and one focused on behavior.

Treatment methods used in TF-CGT are cognitive therapy and (imaginary) exposure. Cognitive behavioral therapy usually focuses on "reprogramming" certain - unhelpful - thinking patterns. Here, your therapist can help you face your fears, through role-playing and/or by teaching you how to relax your body and mind.

How U-center treats PTSD

Treating PTSD and underlying symptoms

The impact of PTSD on your daily life varies from person to person. PTSD is often at the root of personality issues, addictions, lifestyle or relationship problems. This requires customized therapy that approaches the client as a whole, taking into account everything that can affect your life and the trauma.

At U-center, we treat PTSD with a variety of therapies, the most important of which are EMDR and cognitive behavioral therapy. Underlying issues surrounding your PTSD symptoms can be included in the therapy. During the intake phase of your treatment, you will have conversations with a psychologist, psychiatrist or psychotherapist. The outcome of these conversations helps us determine the appropriate therapy with you.

Clinical admission

During a 6-week intensive inpatient stay, we do everything we can to help you recover. This allows you to progress and process your trauma in a short period of time. In doing so, we also require an active commitment from you during therapy.

During your stay at our clinic in Epen you will work on your recovery through various trauma treatments in a fixed treatment team. You will set your goals in a personal treatment plan and discuss with the treatment staff how you want to achieve these goals. The welcoming environment and facilities of our clinic give you the environment you need to process your trauma.

Relapse after treatment

You may leave the clinic fully recovered, but you may experience a stressful event some time after your admission. During treatment, you and the treatment team make a plan to prevent relapse as much as possible. This plan provides tools if your PTSD symptoms return. By taking rest, maintaining your daily routine and continuing to discuss difficult situations with an outpatient therapist or loved ones, you can minimize symptoms as much as possible.
