Stay in balance

u-center werkgevers re-integratie

Stress in the workplace is occupational disease No. 1. The people who have had to deal with it have one thing in common: if they had talked about it earlier with those around them, at home and at work, it probably would never have gotten this far. That is why it is important to make work stress discussible. To put work stress on the agenda everywhere in the Netherlands, the Week of Work Stress will be organized from November 16-20, 2020. The central theme this year is: stay in balance!

Other work situation

For many people this year, the work situation has changed. By necessity, you are suddenly working from home with the whole family around you or from the couch in your small studio. Not ideal, as your workplace can greatly affect your job happiness. There is also good news. Research by TNO (September 2020) shows that the number of reported burnout complaints is at the same level as before the crisis. The work-life balance has not changed either, according to this survey of more than 10,000 employees. The results seem to indicate good resilience among employees.

After the corona measures went into effect, a portion of workers report that they began working mostly at home. Three months after the start of the measures (in March), 44 percent of people worked at home, two-thirds of them fully. Highly educated workers and workers between the ages of 25 and 54 in particular worked much (partially) at home. Working from home is most common in financial services and ICT.

Further research will have to show what the long-term effects are and whether any risk groups need attention. In the last quarter of 2020, TNO will do a follow-up measurement with these employees to also map the long-term effects.

More stress than usual

Constantly 'on'

We all experience periods when we experience more stress than usual. When such a period lasts too long, your body does not recover from the amount of stress. You are constantly "on" and in survival mode, resulting in overload. There is no more room for reflection, connecting, processing, dwelling and enjoying. People with these symptoms have less confidence in their personal abilities than before the symptoms began. When the stress and overload last too long, you can become overworked. You can still recover from this fairly quickly by taking rest. If you ignore this and keep going while you are already overworked, you can get burned out and exhausted. In popular parlance, this is referred to as burnout, but it is not an official diagnosis. Treatment of burnout is not covered by basic health insurance. A burnout can be a reason to investigate a medical indication. This will have to be properly investigated. We therefore recommend contacting our communication center.

Changing patterns of behavior

Acquisition of insight

First, we will need to properly investigate through a comprehensive screening what is going on. Check our application procedure here.

Our treatment focuses on acquiring insight into the origins of problems and on changing functioning at various levels. Cognitive behavioral therapy supplemented with other interventions form the basis for changing behavioral patterns. We also pay attention to underlying personality traits, such as excessive perfectionism and responsibility. This takes place in a fixed team with several therapists, tailored to your situation. The integrated approach and the frequency of the treatment sessions ensure that you quickly regain your sense of self, learn to relax and maintain a balance between exertion, relaxation and rest. We help you build up your capacity and improve your physical condition.
